About Us

The Thummerer Winery

Our uniqueness lies in dedication, purposeful hard work, and the joint success of several generations. Since 1984, our family business has been cultivating vineyards and making wine in the Eger Wine Region. Our estate has grown steadily and now covers 100 hectares. Since 2013, we’ve also been producing traditional sparkling wines. Thanks to generational knowledge and tradition, we combine traditional methods with modern technology. Innovation plays a key role in our winery, while the “good old ways” are preserved. We aim to maintain the high quality that has always defined our work, even as we adapt to market demands.

Our winery is located in Noszvaj, 12 km from Eger. The original 2,000 m² estate cellar was hand-carved over 100 years ago into volcanic tuff stone. In 2004, it was expanded with another 2,200 m² cellar system. The stable climate provides ideal conditions for aging wine. The journey to excellence begins in the vineyard, where we carefully select grape varieties suited to the land and microclimate, and harvest them with equal care. Once at the winery, every tool is at our disposal to craft wines and sparkling wines of consistent quality.

We combine traditional methods with the latest technology. Most white wines are produced using reductive technology and controlled fermentation, but we also offer barrel-aged specialties (e.g., Chardonnay battonage, Egri Csillag Grand Superior). Our red wines are fermented on skins for 2–4 weeks, then aged in oak barrels for 1.5–2 years (e.g., Bikavér Classicus, Bikavér Superior, Bikavér Grand Superior), followed by at least six months of bottle aging. Some reds are aged in barrique barrels (e.g., Vili papa cuvée, Evoé cuvée, Tekenőháti Merlot, Selections…), while others are youthful, reductive, and fruity (e.g., Siheder).

The winery was founded by Vilmos Thummerer and his wife, Katalin, who continue to manage the business. The entire leadership team consists of family members — their three children, grandchildren, and daughter-in-law. Thanks to the variety of tasks, everyone found their area of passion. We believe that without our 30 dedicated employees and the expertise of our head winemaker, József Lamport, since 2004, this harmony would not be possible.
