Antioxidants in red wine: what are they good for and how do they affect your health?

Many people have heard that red wine is rich in antioxidants, but what does that actually mean? In this article we look at which antioxidants are found in a glass of red wine, what they are good for, and how they may affect your health and your skin.

Did you know that a glass of red wine may have an effect on the beauty of your skin? Besides delighting your taste buds and helping you unwind when sipped slowly at the end of the day, the antioxidants in red wine also have a skin-renewing effect!

Although red wine has been an essential ingredient of culture, social life and togetherness for thousands of years, many of its other benefits have been uncovered in recent decades. Besides having a positive effect on circulation, the antioxidants in red wine may also play an important role in slowing down ageing. How? Let’s see how the antioxidant content of red wine works for your health and beauty!

Antioxidants: what are they good for?

By now you are probably aware of the general fact that red wine is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants help maintain good health by neutralising free radicals, which can, for example, damage the collagen content and elasticity of the skin. (Among other things, free radicals are responsible for the ageing of cells.)

Which antioxidants are found in red wine?

Red wine contains polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins and proanthocyanidins, among others, and also resveratrol (in small amounts, but it is there) in every bottle! These substances get into the wine mainly from the skins of black grapes. (Besides black grapes, resveratrol is also found in high amounts in cranberries and blueberries.)

The benefits of the antioxidants in red wine

According to studies, resveratrol has many health benefits: it supports healthy heart and circulatory function and is also thought to have anti-inflammatory effects. Although a glass of wine contains only a minimal amount, as an ingredient in cosmetics resveratrol can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, where its wrinkle-filling effect helps keep the skin even, radiant and youthful, and it also promotes collagen synthesis, which likewise helps keep the skin young.

Quality over quantity

Since you would need to drink nearly a thousand bottles of red wine for your body to fully benefit from the anti-ageing effects of its resveratrol content, we encourage you instead to choose quality red wines with a proven high antioxidant content from black grape skins! Red wine enjoyed in moderation can contribute to your wellbeing, and sooner or later your skin will thank you for it!
