32 Years old the Thummerer Winery
The Thummerer Winery is a family enterprise that began in 1984 when we first started grape cultivation and wine making. We produce wines from our self-established, 100-hectare vineyard in the Eger wine region.
There is a wide selection of varieties on our land. The main varieties are Királyleányka, Chardonnay, Ottonel Muscatel, Tramini, Zenit, Sauvignon Blanc, Kékfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Blauburger and Kadarka. In our vineyard, we grow 80% black grapes and 20% white.
We harvest grapes from the Áfrika, Vidra and Mészhegy hills of Eger; the Tekenőhát, Kőkötő and Csókás hills of Noszvaj; the Juszalagos hill of Novaj; and the Nagyvölgy and Nagyvölgy-tető hills of Szomolya. We have started to replace the older plantations, and as a new experiment, we have established Cabernet Dorsa and Csóka varieties. Our most recent plantation is in Nagyeged in Eger where we established the variety needed to produce the Nagyeged Eger Bikavér Superior and Grand Superior wines.
Every year we renew our technology with internationally recognized modern and superior quality equipment. This is true not only for our winery but also for our viticulture. Our main goal is to attain the highest quality so that we can create a specialty each year that will enhance our selection.
Our wines can be found primarily in the exclusive restaurants and hotels of Hungary, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and France. In addition, a selection of our wines can be purchased from local retail stores.
Our winery is located in Noszvaj, 12 km from the center of Eger. The 2,000 sq. meter cellar, which was once an estate manor, was carved out by hand from the volcanic tufa rock. We extended the old cellar with a new, 2,200 sq. meter cellar system that was also hewn from the volcanic tufa rock. The temperate and balanced climate of the cellar provides ideal conditions for wine aging.
We process the majority of the white grapes by reductive technology and directed fermentation, although white barrique specialties also appear in our selections, such as the Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
The red wines are ready after fermenting on the skin for 2 to 4 weeks, then aging in the traditional way for 1.5 to 2 years in oak barrels. The wines then spend at least an additional six months aging in their bottles before leaving the cellar. We are aging a few of our red wines in barrique barrels, such as our Vili Papa Cuvée, Evoé Cuvée, Pinot Noir and selections.
We are proud of our wines that have been recognized with various awards from both local and international wine competitions.
The winery's founder, Vilmos Thummerer won the
„The Wine Producer of the Year, 1995.”
The winery is the member of the Pannon Guild of Winewrights, which brings together the leading wine makers of Hungary and the Hungarian Wine Academy.
According to points we received at national wine competitions, we were awarded „The Most Effective Family Winery” in 1994 and 1996.
Additional Awards: The Wine Grower of the Year and The Wine Maker of the Year.
Thummerer Winery awarded
"Wine Cellar of the Year 2011"
The most efficient Wine Cellar of Hungary
according to the results of the 14. VinAgora Internatinal Wine Competition and the XXXIV. National Wine Competition in the year of 2013.
Every member of the family, including our children and our sons-in-law take part in the work of the winery. Since the end of 2004, we continue moving forward with the help of our enologist József Lamport and the winery's thirty permanent workers.
Our family's wines hold a special place both in local gastronomy and professional competitions. We believe that in order for pálinka to be successful, it must also go through the same attentive, quality-centered process. Currently we have 90 hectares of grape plantations, a modern grape processor and a 4,200 sq. meter tuff cellar. Due to the excellent conditions, perfect ingredients and a distillery located adjacent to our cellar, we decided to endeavor to make pálinka. Our main products are the törköly (marc brandy) and the seprő (lees brandy) pálinka selected by varieties and vintages.
Because we process our black grapes by the method of traditional skin-on fermentation, the result is deep red grapes (törköly) that are ready to be distilled immediately. The white wines are produced by directed fermentation and cooling, which retains most of the flavors and aromas and provides an excellent base for the pálinka.
Gábor Pulay, who is also a family member, is our pálinka master. He makes the pálinka in a updated traditional „Kisüsti” copper distiller system.
„Excellent grape, gifted wine maker, conscientious cellar master.”
„If the eye is the reflection of the soul, then the wine is the reflection of the wine maker's soul.”
„The view of a hill is always nicer with grapes. A beautiful dinner can become an everlasting memory if coupled with a beautiful wine. The camaraderie of a group is always deeper if the members drink wine to make the conversations more meaningful. Our aim is to make unique wines, so that our wine-lover friends and gourmets will notice and appreciate the nuances and discover their favorites.”
„Unstoppable ambition, creative power, confidence and honesty best describe my husband. The desire to create lives in him vividly: to excel without relaxing or laying back. He never summarizes. He keeps on building the future purposefully, unwaveringly. After spending forty strong years filled with hard work I can see he is not just stubborn but also talented.”
