As we reported earlier, last year marked thirty years since Vilmos Thummerer, founder of Thummerer Winery, won the prestigious Winemaker of the Year title. With this title, the Hungarian Wine Academy recognises the outstanding professional achievement and many years of work of a Hungarian winemaker. Besides consistently excellent quality, results at wine competitions, marketing, presence, likeability, the goodwill a winery inspires and, last but not least, the personality of the winemaker all count.
In 2025, József Lamport, head winemaker at Thummerer Winery, became Winemaker of the Year!
The two winemakers worked together in exemplary harmony from 2004.
Building on the spirit of their shared work, after Vilmos Thummerer passed away, József Lamport continued making wine rooted in tradition and in modern trends.
As he put it when accepting the award: “For me, beyond being the highest professional recognition, this title can be summed up in one word: responsibility. Not “only” towards the profession, but also a responsibility to carry on the way of thinking of Vilmos Thummerer, an exceptionally successful winemaker. I am doing everything in my power and knowledge to ensure that we continue to represent the values this title stands for in the future.”
